Neuro ophthalmology is a sub-specialty concerned with the inter-relation of the eyes and the brain. Generally a person will need to see a neuro ophthalmologist after a stroke (CVA/TIA), brain injury or brain tumour. A full assessment of the vision is required as there are many aspects of the vision that may be affected by these conditions.
The neuro ophthalmologist will assess the visual field (peripheral vision), muscle balance, pupil responses, colour vision and general state of the health of the eyes to determine the nature of the dysfunction and the best course of treatment.
After any kind of injury or trauma to the brain it is important that the eyes be assessed for the ability to drive and function safely and neuro ophthalmologists are able to assist in the resumption of normal activities.
